That Keyword Mess Pt. 1
You finally got you website uploaded and working, now what do you do. First of all people are not going to magically appear at your site. If you are like me you might have found this out the hard way. That old saying “If you build it they will come”, is not true when dealing in the internet marketing business. You must build it then you must work it (optimize) then not only will they come but they will come back.
Basic SEO teaches that a good Keyword is the life and death of a new site. Keyword research should be done before adding content to your site. The ideal is to rank high in search engines for your keyword. There are many tools out there to help with your keyword research but I use the tool at http://www.goodkeywords.com its free and that a plus for me.
Enter a generic keyword and Good Keywords will return a list of related terms. The top word on the list being the most searched term. Now the mistake I made was choosing that term for my keyword. Very bad mistake on my part. To much competition if a term is searched to much. Choose a term that is down the list. The trick is to get some traffic from those less searched terms. Remember if a term is only searched 500 times per month and your site is listed at the number one spot, most searchers will click on your site.
After finding a few keywords (3 is a good start), go to Google and check out the competition website.
When submitting your site to search engines and directories make sure to use your keywords.
